Pick of Wine for the weekend of May 25-26, 2013:
Les Maîtres Vignerons de la Presqu’île de Saint-Tropez
Carte Noire Rosé 2012 Côtes de Provence AC
Way easier to drink than it is to say, this easy-going Provençal rosé, with its iconic amphora-shaped bottle, should be a candidate for “the wine of summer” and not just the weekend. Vintages Product Consultants know the wine by its shorter name – Saint-Tropez Carte Noire Rosé. In the south of France this type of wine is enjoyed outside throughout the day with all types of food. It is “the” patio wine.
Tasting Note: Very attractive pink/bronze in colour. This pretty rosé shows whiffs of cherry blossom, apple and herb aromas on the nose. Crisp, crunchy and dry on the palate, Carte Noire is the quintessential Provençal rosé; medium-bodied, refreshing and full of verve. The finish is dry, clean and fruity with a touch of fresh strawberry.
Enjoy With: Enjoy with grilled fish or chicken, seafood salad and any dish with olives in it.
Style: Easy-going and fruity rosé.
Terroir / Region: The Saint-Tropez peninsula is the sunniest place in France. The large granite formation is surrounded by the moderating influence of the sea which keeps the region a bit cooler than it is inland. Grapes are quite happy to grow here and are planted everywhere on a mix of gneiss-rich soil. It is part of the Côtes de Provence appellation.
Producer: In 1964, a group of eight wine-producing estates got together to form Les Maîtres Vignerons de la Presqu’île de Saint Tropez. Together, the group could produce enough wine to satisfy local demand and bottle some for export as well. 2007 saw the expansion of the winery with some new buildings, and the group is now one of the largest and most important producers of top quality wine in Provence.
Availability: Les Maîtres Vignerons de la Presqu’île de Saint Tropez Carte Noire Rosé 2012 will be released through Vintages on Saturday, May 25th. Some stores will have stock earlier, so check the location nearest to you.
