Pick of Wine for the weekend of May 18-19, 2013:
Caliterra Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2011
Colchagua Valley, Chile
You may be looking for a wine to stock up on this weekend, something inexpensive and delicious that you can drink with just about anything. Chilean wines are well known for delivering exceptional value for the money and this Cabernet Sauvignon is a great example of a delicious red wine at an affordable price.
Tasting Note: Expressive, ripe red fruit aromas and flavours are the hallmarks of this delicious Chilean Cab. Medium-full bodied and perfectly balanced, it over-delivers on every front. Soft, juicy tannins give the wine a silky smooth feel and some weight and texture. A very pleasant finish offers up a little chocolate and spice layered over cherry-like acidity. Amazing value for the money.
Enjoy With: Enjoy on its own or with grilled meat, pizza, Mediterranean inspired dishes or medium strong cheese.
Style: Medium-bodied, fruity red wine.
Terroir / Region: The arid Colchagua Valley is blessed with abundant sunshine and water, and near-perfect growing conditions. There is a constant dry breeze that protects the vines from certain diseases that can adversely affect a vine’s health. Late ripening grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere do particularly well in this region and are the valley’s two leading varieties.
Producer: Caliterra’s mission is not only to produce the best wine possible but to do so in the most sustainable way possible. Through a holistic approach to everything from water management to the way they ship their wines abroad, Caliterra is constantly evaluating their impact on the environment and making adjustments. They are very close to achieving organic status for all of their wines.
Availability: Caliterra Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva is available in the Chilean section of the LCBO as is its white Sauvignon Blanc partner. From now until May 25th, you can get 4 Bonus Air Miles with every bottle purchased.
