Pick of Wine for the weekend of May 11-12, 2013:
Kunde Estate Chardonnay 2011, Sonoma Valley, California
Here is a great example of what Sonoma Valley does best – it makes fun-to-be-with, immensely drinkable Chardonnay that can be enjoyed by itself or with a multitude of different foods. This Mother’s Day weekend, you’ll need a white wine that’s full of personality and charm that you can enjoy with family and friends. White wine doesn’t get much friendlier than Kunde Estate Chardonnay.
Tasting Note: This is a very well balanced, energetic Cali Chardonnay that delivers loads of tropical fruit, citrus and sandalwood on the nose and apple, ripe peach and toasty spiciness on the palate. There is a wonderfully creamy texture to this wine that makes it feel quite rich and full, while lively, lemony acidity keeps the wine refreshing and bright.
Enjoy With: Grilled chicken, pesto pizza, fish and seafood. Excellent with quiche and Caesar Salad too.
Style: Full-bodied and rich white wine.
Terroir / Region: The Sonoma Valley sits just north of San Francisco Bay and is influenced by its proximity to that cold body of water. During the day, temperatures are, for the most part, hot and dry which helps to develop ripe fruit notes in the grapes, while cool evenings ensure that the fruit maintains its acidity. The valley has numerous micro-climates which allows for a wide variety of different grapes to be grown.
Producer: The Kunde (rhymes with Fundy) Estate is a family run enterprise that is situated on 1,850 acres of land just south of the town of Kenwood. Grape varieties like Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are planted on several different sites and are matched to soil and micro-climate. The Kunde family has adopted sustainable farming and production practices which have earned the winery several prestigious awards.
Availability: Kunde Estate Chardonnay 2011, Sonoma Valley, California will be released through Vintages this Saturday. Check your local stores sooner as some of the wine is already on shelf.
